Who we are

Alfredo Goldman Vel Lejbman
Alfredo Goldman Vel Lejbman | Department of Computer Science

He is a full-time professor at São Paulo University, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME). Graduated with a BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of São Paulo (1990), MSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of São Paulo (1994), and Ph.D. in Informatique et Systèmes - Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (1999). He is currently an associate professor at the University of SãoPaulo. He co-chaired several conferences and tracks, like XP 2024 and SC 23 - co-workshop chair, Carla 22, Europar 21 and 17, and SSC 20 - co-track chair. His areas of expertise include parallel and distributed computing, scheduling, and agile software development. Since 2023, he has been coordinating a scientific collaboration between the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the University of São Paulo (USP) with the aim of proposing medium-term projects at the USP - CNRS center. At the beginning of 2024, He was elected Chair of the Technical Community on Parallel Processing (TCPP) of the IEEE Computer Society.He participated in several projects sponsored by Brazilian research agencies, the European Community, and HP-Labs. He coordinated a Capes-Cofecub project with France and a Procad project with two other Brazilian Universities. He organized an advanced school on Smart Cities in July 201. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences and supervised over 40 masters of sciences, 9 Ph. Ds., and 4 postdocs. He established industry-academia cooperations, such as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise.

Daniel Macedo Batista
Daniel Macedo Batista | Department of Computer Science

Associate Professor working on topics related to computer networks. He received his Computer Science (2003) degree from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, MSc in Computer Science (2006), and PhD in Computer Science (2010) degrees from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil. His students received several awards, including the IEEE ISCC 2018 Best Student Paper Award and second place at the ACM SAC 2014 Student Research Competition. Since 2024, he has been the vice-chair of the Internet Technical Committee, a joint committee of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) and the Internet Society (ISOC) that stimulates interdisciplinary technical exchange, application of state-of-the-art communications, and related technologies to the Internet infrastructure and services. He has published 115+ refereed papers and his main research interests are Privacy and Security on IoT, B5G, and Data Analytics applied to Computer Networks.

Fabio Kon
Fabio Kon | Department of Computer Science

Full Professor of Computer Science at USP. He has a B.A. degree in Music (São Paulo State University), B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Science (University of São Paulo), and a Ph.D. in Computer Science (University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign). He currently carries out research in the fields of Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, and Applied Data Science. He has advised over 35 Masters students, over 15 Doctoral students, and 7 Post-docs. In 2018/19, he was a Visiting Professor at MIT, USA, where he researched data science applied to Smart Cities. In 2013, he was a Visiting Professor at the Technion, Israel, where he conducted research on Software Startup Ecosystems and Digital Entrepreneurship. Fabio founded the USP Free and Open Source Competence Center, was a Director of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and a member of the São Paulo Research Agency (FAPESP) Adjunct Panel both for Innovation and for Exact Sciences and Engineering. Currently, Fabio leads the Institute for S&T of the Internet of the Future for Smart Cities (InterSCity.org). He is a member of the Brazilian Computer Society and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.

Kelly Rosa Braghetto
Kelly Rosa Braghetto | Department of Computer Science

Assistant Professor working on Databases topics. She obtained her Ph.D. (2011) and MSc. (2006) in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo (USP) and her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (2002) from the São Paulo State University (UNESP). She has been working as an assistant professor at IME-USP since 2012. She has authored dozens of peer-reviewed scientific papers, with her primary research interests related to data engineering, data integration, scientific data management, and dataflow and workflow management. She actively participates in academic communities, contributing to conferences and serving as a scientific journal reviewer. She has coordinated and participated in several projects sponsored by Brazilian and French research agencies. She is currently the director of the FLOSS Competence Center (CCSL) at IME-USP, which encompasses activities related to education, research, development, and publicizing of Free and Open Source Software. She also coordinates initiatives to empower girls and women to pursue technology careers, aiming to redress the gender imbalance in the area.

Nelson Lago
Nelson Lago | Department of Computer Science

He has a degree in Music with a major in Composition from the University of São Paulo (2000) and a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo (2004). He currently works in the Department of Computer Science at the University of São Paulo. He has experience in Computer Science, with an emphasis on Musical Computing and Free Software.

Paulo Roberto Miranda Meireles
Paulo Roberto Miranda Meireles | Department of Computer Science

Assistant Professor specializing in Software Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 2013, his MSc. in Computing from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 2008, and his Bachelor of Technology degree in Software Development from the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) in 2006. He has made significant contributions to different Brazilian universities as a professor, including the University of Brasília (UnB), the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), and the Federal University of ABC (UFABC). He has authored 70+ peer-reviewed scientific papers, with his primary research interests related to free/open-source software, agile methodologies, and experimental software engineering. He actively participates in academic communities, contributing to conferences and serving as a scientific journal reviewer. Beyond academia, Paulo Meirelles is deeply involved in the free/open-source software community, where he mentors students and contributes to community projects, underscoring his commitment to promoting the values and practices inherent in the free/open-source software ecosystem.
